The Holy Island of Lindisfarne & Bamburgh (Bebbanburg) Castle

In the very beginning of November I went on a trip to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, as well as the old Ancient Capital of Northumbria, Bebbanburg Castle (Bamburgh is its name today). If you've read any of my other posts on my website, it's quite obvious that I love all the places that I go to - Lindisfarne and Bebbanburgh is no exception.

I joined a group trip organized by Robert from Lundgren Tours, which made the experience completely hassle-free. If you don't have a car, these spots can be tricky to access. Robert was fantastic and did an amazing job — his enthusiasm, deep knowledge of Northumbrian history, and personable approach made the trip all the more enjoyable!

First, some pictures of Lindisfarne...

That 16th-century castle you see in the distance is perched in a breathtakingly beautiful location, and the walk to reach it is absolutely lovely. I didn’t go inside, but the view alone is worth the trip.
The ruins on the island are the remains of a 12th-century priory, but the area's history stretches back to approximately the 7th century.

I've never been to an area that is so affected by tides - so for me that was the most impressive part - the landscape was just stunning. An seeing it change throughout the visit, was even more impressive to watch!

Bamburgh (Bebbanburg) Castle

Bamburgh Castle has an extraordinary history spanning over 1,400 years. While I won’t go into the details here, I highly recommend exploring their website for a deep dive. It’s definitely worth visiting the castle itself to wander the grounds, marvel at the beautifully decorated rooms, and even venture into the slightly eerie cellars in the basement.

Well that's it for this time. From September - December 2024 I was on an exchange semester at Durham University (hence the stories of places in the north of England), in connection with my postgraduate studies in Denmark.
Best ancient and antique wishes,
Theodor Knutzen
